Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?
You can register in three different ways. You can choose to register online, which will allow you to use your credit card (preferred method) or you can pay in person at the Football Manitoba office with cash or cheque. Another way you can register is at River Heights Community Centre or Valour Community Centre during their designated registration dates.

When does registration begin?
Online registration begins in mid February, with in person registration happening on designated dates. To register at River Heights Community Centre or Valour Community Centre you must contact them to find out their designated registration times.

Do I have to register online?
No, you can register in person at Football Manitoba, River Heights Community Centre or Valour Community Centre on specified dates.

How can I pay for registration fees?
You can pay online through credit card or in person through cash or cheque made out to Football Manitoba.

How much does it cost to register a player?

For the 2011 season it will be $150 to register a player, however, coaches, managers, trainers etc are all free.

When is the registration cut off date?

You CANNOT register online after February 29, 2011. In person registration ends on March 5 @ midnight, 2011. We will begin placing players on teams at this time, and there will be NO exceptions to the rule.

Can I register more than one player at a time?

You can register up to three players online at a time as long as payment is made. Once these players are registered you can log back in and register three more, and so on and so forth. In person you can register as many players as you'd like, but again, payment needs to be made at the time of registration.

How many players can play on a team?

A normal flag football team usually has 10 players, however, a 15 competitive team or 16/17 competitive team is limited to 7 players and two coaches.

Is there a maximum number of teams in each age category?
No, there is never a limit of how many teams will be in a league, but if there is a multitude of teams we will create divisions to make scheduling more manageable.

How many games a week will my child be playing?

Every team will play two games every week that will be designated on a certain day, based on age group. The first game will always start at 6:30pm with the second game following at the same location at 7:30pm. If a game is cancelled there will not be rescheduled games.

Where will the games be played?

Flag football games can be played on fields throughout the city. Unlike tackle, no one has a home field.

What days will my child be playing?

Monday - 15 year old girls competitive (1997), 15 year old boys competitive (1997), 15 year old regular (1997),

 7/8 year olds (2004/2005)
Tuesday - 13 year olds (1999) & 11 year olds (2001)
Wednesday - 16/17 year olds (1995/1996), 12 year olds (2000), 9 year olds (2003)
Thursday - 14 year olds (1998) & 10 year olds (2002)

Can my child play up an age group or down an age group?
Football Manitoba only allows you to play up an age group and the age group in which you fall is based on the YEAR you were born, not school year. You are NOT allowed to play down an age group.

How many times will my child practice a week?
Practicing all depends on the child's team. Some teams will practice once or twice a week, while others won't practice at all. This is completely up to the coach of your child's team, and is not controlled by Football Manitoba. Please respect the coaches wishes in regards to practice, but if you have any concerns express them to your coach or manager.

Where will we practice?
Football Manitoba does not book fields for practices. If your team chooses to practice you are responsible to find an open green space to hold these practices.

Will everyone I play with be from the same part of the city?
We do try our best to put teams together that are from the same area, however, this is sometimes not possible as it is dependant on registration numbers.

Will my child be given a team if registering as an individual?

If you register as an individual we do our best to place them on a team, but sometimes it doesn't work out due to registration numbers. You may be placed on a team without a coach, and a parent may have to volunteer to coach. In other cases, no parents step up and we have to dismantle the team. If this happens, you will be issued a refund.

Do I need to be certified to coach?
You do need to attend a one day NCCP coaching clinic that will be held at the end of March or early April. This course is MANDATORY. You also must be certified in Respect in Sport, which is a 3 hour online course http://sportmanitoba.essentialtalk.com/. If you have already completed this course with another sport you must log in and add Football as a sport to your file. Please watch our website for more details. You also need to fill out a Child Registry Check which will be available through Football Manitoba.

Can we put in a request for a certain NFL/CFL team name and logo for our jerseys?
Jersey colors, teams and logos are not decided by us at Football Manitoba. Teams are automatically assigned their team name by the Football Canada inventory that is provided to us.

Can I put in a request to play with certain players/teams?
You may put a request for a certain player or team on the top of your registration form, but there are no guarantees. We will try our best to accommodate you.

What do I need for my child to play flag?
Your child will need to wear solid colored shorts with NO stripes or pockets, a mouth guards, and cleats (Football Manitoba approved) or runners for footwear. All other equipment will be provided to you in your registration fee.

If my child doesn't like flag, can I get a refund?
There will be no refunds issued after the 1st game of the season for each age category. Refunds must be requested in email format from the legal guardian/parent.

If my competitive team wins their age group, where will they travel for Nationals?
The National Flag Championship's location changes every year and are held in either July or August. Flight, accommodations and facilities will all be covered for seven players and two coaches (Please note that if you have both males and females on your team you must have a female and male coach/coaching staff at Nationals). Once we know the exact dates of the tournament and location we will post them on our website.
